At the launch of Shombit Sengupta's Strategic Pokes in Mumbai

Shombit is truly an interesting person I have known since about 10-15 years. We have worked with him multiple times, not just once. That itself shows there is a lot of goodwill for him in the organization, we see a lot of value in working with Shombit. The first time we worked was on the brand Parachute, our main selling product.

Shombit was instrumental in turning around Parachute, what we call our resource generating engine. Apart from changing the identity of the brand in terms of packaging, he brought in a big shift. Parachute at that time was strongly associated with coconut oil. He said to actually shift from coconut oil to coconut so that the brand can leverage all the benefits of coconut. That was a very important shift he brought up. It helped us to go into some other products based on the coconut equity, not just coconut oil. So whether it was body lotion based on coconut milk or other products with ingredients of coconut proteins, that key shift in terms of thinking from coconut oil to leveraging coconut and its equity and benefits or whatever arising from coconut, I would clearly give to Shombit.

We worked with Shombit for the brand Saffola where he really changed the overall approach to managing the brand. Earlier Saffola had one extension and was known as refined sunflower oil. He said to remove all association with ingredients, that the brand should clearly be fronting on its hard health equity. Since then we removed the association and have gone to various extension for Saffola, including Saffola foods like Savory Oats.

Shombit’s contribution in both Parachute and Saffola has been transformational. It helped us go to newer categories and newer extensions. So I would like to thank him for that.

Apart from being colorful, I think Shombit is one of the most diverse persons I have met in my life. He had said diversity brings in innovation, so you need to have diverse individuals within an organization to drive innovation. In Shombit himself we have such a diverse person; he is a musician and an artist which everybody knows about. He is the perfect combination of left brain and right brain. He is a marketing consultant, a historian, an observer of trends, and he combines it all so beautifully in the overall analysis of whatever he is doing, that I am sure it gets reflected in writing his books too.

This evening before coming to this function I took the most colorful shirt out from my wardrobe and showed it to my wife. She knew I was to be here and said, “Forget it. You will be no comparison to Shombit!” She was right. Nobody can compete with Shombit in terms of dressing. Every time I meet and ask him about his wardrobe, he pulls up the bottom of his pants to show me the equally colourful socks he buys from shops in London or Paris! I’d like to wish Shombit all the very best. I am sure this book will do much better than the earlier book, and we will wait for one more book from him in a few months.
